General Manager

Position: General Manager
Location: Stoke-on-Trent
Salary: Up to 67k (DEO)

We seek an experienced and driven leader to oversee our logistics operations in Stoke-on-Trent. This role is responsible for site performance, financial control, operational efficiency, and service delivery. You will be instrumental in shaping the site’s strategic direction while ensuring excellence in execution across warehousing and transport functions. A background with a freight company is essential, covering all aspects of freight, transport, warehouse and site processes.

Key Responsibilities

Transport & Logistics

• Oversee the compliant and safe movement of goods, including hazardous materials, in line with regulatory standards.

• Monitor transport activities to ensure efficient service within budget constraints.

• Work alongside the Head of UK Transport on matters including vehicle planning and fleet renewal.

• Ensure robust service levels are maintained for international operations and identify efficiencies.

• Collaborate with the commercial team to develop cost tariffs and support new business development.

• Support internal departments (Sales, Finance, Supply Chain, Customer Service) to ensure seamless operational delivery and issue resolution.

Site & Warehouse Operations

• Develop and execute the site’s annual business plan in alignment with broader organisational goals.

• Take full financial responsibility for the facility, ensuring cost control and delivery of budgeted performance.

• Manage daily site operations to ensure optimal efficiency and service levels.

• Drive a culture of continuous improvement, identifying and implementing initiatives that increase productivity and competitiveness.

• Regularly review operational workflows and infrastructure, applying best practices to streamline performance.

• Coordinate with internal departments, including HR, Finance, Transport, and European Operations, to meet performance targets and KPIs.

Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations, promoting a safety-first culture throughout the site.

• Maintain legal, insurance, and operational compliance across all site functions.

• Plan and deploy resources effectively to meet variable demand and operational needs.

• Actively contribute to operational meetings, providing timely and accurate updates to the management team.

• Complete reports and documentation to required standards and deadlines.

Required Experience & Skills

• Proven experience managing large-scale, multi-client logistics or distribution sites.

• Strong background in transport management and cross-dock or fulfilment operations.

• Familiarity with warehouse management systems and intermediate MS Word and Excel skills.

• Confident in leading change, solving problems, and driving operational improvements.

• Ability to coach, influence, and make sound decisions under pressure.
