Automation Field Service Technician

Role: Automation Field Service Technician

Location: Indianapolis

Salary: Up to $85,000 depending on experience

I am currently recruiting for an experienced Automation Field Service Technician to join an established engineering business supporting customers with the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance of industrial automation and control systems.

This is a hands on field-based role, working directly with customers to diagnose issues, carry out repairs and maintenance, commission new equipment and provide technical support. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of electrical control systems and ideally experience working with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs and industrial networks.

Responsibilities include:

  • Carry out installations, start-ups, commissioning, repairs and calibrations as required.
  • Troubleshoot electrical wiring, relay logic, control circuits and safety circuits using electrical schematics and appropriate test equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair faults involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, networks and other automation equipment.
  • Carry out inspections and preventative maintenance, including tolerance checks, current measurements, point to point checks, UPS testing, alarm operation, sensor operation and calibration.
  • Back up PLC and control system programs and maintain accurate records of system changes.
  • Provide technical assistance to customers by phone and remotely to help diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Assess existing control systems, identify potential problems and recommend improvements or upgrades.
  • Commission and test new control and automation systems.
  • Train customers in the correct operation and basic maintenance of control systems.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with relevant electrical standards, regulations and company procedures.
  • Accurately complete service reports, job sheets and other required documentation, including parts used, labour and travel time.
  • Obtain customer sign off on completed service work and parts deliveries.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools and equipment and report any maintenance requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate stock of tools, spare parts and equipment.
  • Identify potential sales opportunities and provide leads to the Sales Team.

Skills & experience:

  • 3+ years’ experience in industrial automation, controls, electrical engineering or field service.
  • Strong understanding of low-voltage control circuits, three-phase power and industrial electrical systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and programming PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, SCADA and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with electrical test equipment, hand and power tools.
  • Strong fault finding, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Good computer skills, including Windows and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly.
  • High School Diploma/GED required. Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or a related field preferred.
  • Valid driving licence and clean driving record.
  • Comfortable travelling to customer sites, working at heights and lifting up to 80 lbs.
  • Willingness to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, holidays and occasional overnight stays.
  • Professional appearance and commitment to site safety and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in a rotating on call schedule covering evenings, weekends and holidays where required.
